Established in the mid-1930s, Yoshida & Co are among the best-known bag making companies in the world. Their PORTER line, named for the luggage-carrying profession of porters, is among their most popular, gaining international renown and recognition during the 1980s, and maintaining a cult status since then. Their bags are remarkable, all original designs, produced with custom textiles and hardware that will only get better with age.

PORTER’s Luggage Label / OldNew collection is a limited release of Kakishibu-dyed nylon bags with patinated trims and beautiful tonal variety. Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dying technique that uses aged persimmon tannins, with “Kakishibu” literally meaning “persimmon astringency”. Kakishibu has also been called “Taiyo-zome (sun-dye)” due to the photosensitivity of the dye – areas exposed to light will grow darker and richer in tone, eventually reaching a true persimmon color.

The Luggage Label / OldNew line features two different nylon finishes, “Kakishibu-zome”, an orange/tan finish developed by soaking a white bag in persimmon juice and sun-drying it, and “Kure-zome”, which modifies the persimmon dye by adding iron to the mixture, producing a warm charcoal/black color. As a result of the sun-drying and natural dyes used, the finished bags have a weathered texture that will continue to fade and patina over time.

The Newspaper Bag is a medium size shoulder bag that features a spacious interior and closes with a strap and D-ring combo & snaps. To pair with the “antiqued” fabric, the shoulder strap is made from a thick woven cotton rope with frayed ends as an embellishment.
